Barriers to Employment Success Inventory (BESI) gives individuals a quick and easy way to identify the hurdles and obstacles that stand in the way of job success. Though it takes only 20 to 30 minutes to complete, this powerful inventory not only helps people conduct a more effective job search, it helps them be more successful on the job as well.

Test takers rate 50 simple statements covering five categories: Personal and Financial, Emotional and Physical, Career Decision-Making and Planning, Job-Seeking Knowledge, and Training and Education. After users have identified their barriers, BESI suggests ways to overcome them and helps individuals develop an action plan that can be used in group or individual career counseling.

This edition has a lower reading level (seventh grade), simplified scoring, new and revised items, and additional validity and reliability data. In addition, BESI's fourth step now focuses on suggestions for overcoming barriers, while the fifth step devotes more space to developing a plan.

Author Bio

John Liptak, Ed.D., has written several books and best-selling assessments for JIST. He is one of the leading developers of quantitative and qualitative assessments in the country and is the associate director of the Experiential Learning and Career Development office at Radford University in Radford, Virginia.

He provides career assessment and career counseling services for students. He also helps them develop portfolios and search for employment and internship opportunities that match their interests and values. Liptak focuses on teaching students about the connections between career development and learning, leisure, and work experiences.

He consults on the development of assessments for schools and agencies around the country and has developed specialized assessment instruments for use with clients. He is a regular speaker at national and international conventions on assessment development and is also a JIST-certified trainer.
