Author Bio

Mary Sue Burkhardt has been department chair of the Family and Consumer Sciences Department and Career Education Educator at Twin Lakes High School and the Indian Trails Career Cooperative in Monticello, Indiana, since 1972. She serves as lead teacher for Orientation to Life and Careers course, overseeing the curriculum development and training of other teachers.

At Twin Lakes High School, she coordinates the Interdisciplinary Cooperative Education program. Burkhardt also develops and maintains relationships with extensive local business and industrial contacts for more than 100 students each semester.

Burkhardt is an adjunct faculty member at IVY Tech State College in Lafayette and Logansport, Indiana. She has been a Career Specialist since 1993, leading workshops for the Indiana Department of Education, Family and Consumer Science Department and serving on the Leadership Development Programs Advisory Committee in Career Education and Consumer and Family Sciences Advisory Committee at Purdue University. She was also an instructor at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, from 1998 through 2001.

Throughout her teaching career, she has received many recognitions, including Who’s Who of American Women, Who’s Who In American Education; Indian Trails Teacher of the Year Award in 2002; INAFCS Honor Award in 2001; AAFCS National Top Ten Teacher of the Year Award in 2000; INAFCS Teacher of the Year Award in 1999; Indian Trails Leader Award in 1997; and Shining Star Award in 1992.

Burkhardt earned a Bachelor of Science in Vocational Home Economics Education and a Master of Science in Education with an emphasis in Child Development and Family Studies and Career Education.
